A geographical perspective is, “a way to understand a topic or area using spatial features and relationships” (National Geographic, 2018). A geographical perspective offers my research the established understanding that there are uniquely-defining relationships between humans and natural environments. As a geographer, I understand that the relationship between humans and the natural environment is highly complex; climate change is thought to further complicate this relationship. Parks are unique facilities which bring together both the urbanized world’s inhabitants and the natural environment. Placing humans in a natural environment incurs inherent risks. Risk management plans attempt to proactively identify and predict such human-environment interactions. The goal of risk management plans in a public lands (e.g. parks) context is to best prepare humans to endure environmental events with little to no disruption to everyday activities. Sharing of such risk management plan knowledge is necessary for such plans to yield successes.
